Discover the Charm of Coastal South Carolina with Fall Home & Garden Tours
When you visit Coastal South Carolina and the Lowcountry you can’t help but notice the lovely 18th and 19th Century homes that dot the landscape and fall under their spell. Who wouldn’t love to take a peek behind the garden walls and explore the rich history of these architectural beauties? It just so happens that Fall is the perfect time of year to do that very thing.
Both the Historic Beaufort Foundation and the Preservation Society of Charleston offer Fall home and garden tours during the month of October. The Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens in Beaufort South Carolina features a selection of private homes and gardens not normally open to the public. These houses represent three centuries of Beaufort’s famous architectural beauty. The tours are self-paced walking tours offering a distinctive opportunity to observe how contemporary lifestyles thrive within the historic walls of these lovely homes.
The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Fall Tour of Homes, History & Architecture run from October 4th through the 28th and offer several different tour options: Enduring Traditions: Ironwork of the Holy City Walking Tour; Invention of Wings: The Grimke Sisters of Charleston Tour; Photography Walkabout Tour; and The Amazing Buildings of Charleston: ABCs of Architecture. Now in its 42nd year this event is the Society’s foremost annual fundraiser.
Since both communities have their tours going on throughout the month of October there is no need to pick just one – you have time to explore the historic homes of both Beaufort and Charleston. Be sure to come back in the Spring for Savannah’s Home and Garden Tours, held in March.
