How did the Cornucopia Become a Symbol for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is time when the family gathers round, tables groan under the weight of wonderful food, and we ponder all that we have to be thankful for this year. Perhaps your table has a cornucopia for a centerpiece overflowing with fruit, nuts, and other good things.

Thanksgiving is time when the family gathers round, tables groan under the weight of wonderful food, and we ponder all that we have to be thankful for this year. Perhaps your table has a cornucopia for a centerpiece overflowing with fruit, nuts, and other good things.

But how did the cornucopia become associated with Thanksgiving? Where did come from? What does the word ‘cornucopia’ even mean?

Cornucopia is derived from the Latin ‘cornu’ meaning horn and ‘copia’ meaning plenty. The name literally means horn of plenty, which may be how many people know it. Historically a real goat’s horn filled with fruits and grains was depicted at the center of lavish tables of food. In art and literature many Greek and Roman gods and goddesses have been portrayed holding cornucopias.

But how did an ancient symbol of successful harvest come to be associated with Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving décor has always featured the fruits of the Fall harvest, so it is only logical that the traditional and ancient symbol of successful harvest be featured on our Thanksgiving tables. Despite its pagan origins, as Christianity spread through the world, many people clung to their traditional symbols such as the cornucopia. Over time the tie to gods and goddesses fell away and the cornucopia became strictly associated with bountiful harvests.
