Veterans Day traces back 1918, at the end of World War I when an armistice between the U.S. Allied nations and Germany took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For almost one-hundred years, this day has been spent celebrating the many people who’ve fought for our country.
The state of South Carolina is home to approximately 420,968 veterans, many of which live in the lowcountry. With numerous bases, including Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps facilities, the lowcountry is home to tens of thousands of Veterans, active duty and reserve military personnel. In Beaufort County, South Carolina, the current population is approximately 165,000, of that number approximately 20,000 are veterans, 6,500 are active duty and 5,400 are Marine recruits.
