The Best Time to Visit the Lowcountry is Now
Have you been contemplating a visit to the South Carolina Lowcountry? One of the best times to visit is during the month of May. The temperature is perfect – warm days averaging 78 degrees, pleasant nights averaging 67 degrees – and, of course the living is easy.
Once you arrive, one of the hardest decisions you’ll have to make is which charming place to visit first. We have a couple of suggestions: Charleston South Carolina and Savannah Georgia.
This week, we’re taking a look at Charleston. Besides being the home of “Gone With the Wind” charmer Rhett Butler, Charleston is rich in historic appeal: centuries-old mansions, cobblestone walks, lovely trees draped in Spanish moss. The city is also home to art galleries, fine restaurants, and shopping experiences sure to delight. For the Civil War buff, Fort Sumter National Monument is nearby. Take a ferry out to the actual fort, explore the caverns that still house Civil War-era cannons and experience where the War Between the States began in 1861. In Charleston, you’re not far from sun, sand, and soothing waves either. Several beach communities beckon, including Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach.
While on a walking tour in Charleston you might hear it referred to as the Holy City. Certainly, the large number of churches and the city’s reputation for religious tolerance support the name, but there’s a bit more to the story. As columnist Ashley Cooper put it in 1955 “Any city that is … worshipped by its inhabitants and envied by the rest of the world, would inevitably become known – I should think – as the Holy City.”
